Everything a shop does, minus the waiting room.

Most jobs that would normally mean dropping your car off for a day can be done in your driveway, your condo garage, or the lot where you work. We carry a full mobile kit — hand tools, a floor jack and stands, a battery load tester, an OBD-II scanner with live data, and a stocked parts bin for the common failures.

If a job genuinely needs a lift or a machine we don't carry, we'll tell you on the phone before we drive out. No surprise "we'll have to take it in" halfway through.

02 How it works

One phone call, three steps.

1. 1

   You call and describe it

   Tell us the year, make and model, the address the car is sitting at, and what it's doing — or not doing. If you can, tell us the sound. We've diagnosed a lot of cars over the phone.

2. 2

   We quote before we roll

   You get a callout price and an honest range for the repair up front. If it turns out to be something we can't do on site, you pay nothing for the trip.

3. 3

   We come to the vehicle

   Driveway, condo garage, office lot, street parking with a permit — anywhere we can safely work. We diagnose, show you what we found, and fix it on the spot whenever the part is on the van.

What we need from you: about two car-lengths of space, permission to work where the vehicle is parked, and a phone number we can reach you on while we're under the hood.

A North York garage with no garage.

K-T Automotive Mobile Mechanics runs out of 111 Combermere Dr in North York — a residential street off York Mills, a few minutes from the Don Valley. There's no storefront and no waiting room, because there's no reason for you to come to us. The whole business is built around the idea that the car is already parked somewhere convenient, and that's exactly where it should get fixed.

We work on the everyday cars that Toronto actually drives — Civics, Corollas, Elantras, Escapes, Rogues, Jettas, Mazda3s, and the occasional older pickup that someone refuses to give up on. We're not a performance shop and we don't pretend to be. What we are is the person you call when the car won't start, when the brakes are grinding, or when a shop has quoted you something and you want a second opinion before you agree to it.

Being open 24 hours isn't a marketing line. Breakdowns don't schedule themselves around business hours, and a lot of our calls come from people who are stuck at work, stuck at a friend's place, or stuck in a parking garage at an hour when nothing else in the city is answering the phone.

Every job starts with a diagnosis and a quote. We show you the failed part. We tell you what can wait until next month and what genuinely can't. If we think you'd be better off at a dealer for something under warranty, we'll say so and you won't owe us anything for the trip.

We're based in North York and work across the whole city, plus the western edge of Durham and the southern edge of York Region. If you're not sure whether you're in range, call and ask — if we can't get to you, we'll usually know someone who can.
